Adding questions¶
Add questions to a form from its edit page. Each has a question (the label), a field type, optional help text, and a required toggle.
Questions are required by default
Required is on unless you turn it off. Required questions block submission until answered — deliberate for a permission slip, frustrating on an optional comments box.
Check each question rather than accepting the default everywhere.
The ten question types¶
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Text | A short line — a name, a jersey number |
| Number | Numeric answers |
| Radio | One choice from a few, all visible at once |
| Select | One choice from a dropdown |
| Multi Select | Several choices from a list |
| Text Area | Longer, free-form answers |
| URL | A web address |
| An email address | |
| Date | A date, picked from a calendar |
| Rating | A rating |
Choosing between the choice types¶
Radio and Select both take exactly one answer. The difference is display: Radio shows every option at once, Select hides them in a dropdown.
Use Radio for up to about five options — people compare them without clicking. Use Select for long lists, like a list of dates.
Use Multi Select only when more than one answer is genuinely valid. If you want one answer and use Multi Select, you'll get responses with three.
Writing choices¶
For Radio, Select and Multi Select, enter options separated by commas:
Setup, Concessions, Check-in, Cleanup, Wherever needed
Commas separate options, so options can't contain commas
"Friday, Saturday, and Sunday" becomes three separate options, not one. Rewrite as "Friday through Sunday" or "Fri-Sun".
This is the most common mistake when building a form and it isn't obvious until responses come back looking wrong.
Add an escape hatch to any list people might not fit into — "Other", "Wherever needed", "None of these". Without it, a respondent who doesn't match either abandons the form or picks something inaccurate.
Help text¶
Optional, shown with the question. Use it for the thing you'd otherwise get asked:
- The format you want — "MM/DD/YYYY", "include area code"
- Why you're asking — "so we can contact you on the day"
- What happens next — "we'll confirm by email within a week"
Keep it short. Help text that runs longer than the question stops being read.
Ordering¶
Questions appear in the order you set, and can be reordered by dragging.
Order matters more than it looks:
- Easy questions first. Name and email before anything requiring thought
- Group related questions. Jumping between topics makes a form feel longer
- Optional and open-ended last. A comments box at the top makes people think the form is long
Editing and deleting¶
Edit any question to change its label, type, choices, help text or required setting.
Changing a question after responses arrive
Existing answers were recorded against the question as it was. Rewriting the label means old answers now sit under a question that wasn't asked, and switching type — Text to Multi Select, say — leaves answers that don't match the new format.
Deleting a question deletes its answers.
If a form is already live and a question is wrong, it's usually safer to end the form, export what you have, and start a corrected one.
